In Don’t Frighten The Horses, Klein Velderman responds to the work Nederlandsche Vogelen by Cornelius Nozeman and Christiaan Sepp. The ornitological book Nederlandsche vogelen was published in five volumes between 1770 and 1829. Klein Velderman was granted permission to examine the copy that is part of the Artis Library in Amsterdam.
Klein Velderman regards the illustrations by Christiaan Sepp as interpretations of the birds at his time. By retransforming them to a new material: Molten PVC fabric on wooden panel, Klein Velderman doesn’t only want to bring them to the present, but also gives them a new meaning.
Don’t Frighten The Horses is a series of plastic paintings on which the birds don’t seem to care about the speed and madness that characterizes modern times. The serene creatures look undisturbed.
